The nuances of exploitation: Analysis of the concept of trafficking in persons

Abstract

A revision of the concept of human trafficking is made to establish a differentiation of related concepts. Because the concept of trafficking in persons brings together multiple forms of exploitation, the differences between labor exploitation and sexual exploitation are analyzed. The study allows us to understand the ideologies underlying the concept of trafficking in persons, to identify its use as a discursive strategy and to recognize the breadth of victims’ experience. It is proposed to include the concept in the agenda for the improvement of labor market conditions and the recognition of the rights of sex workers.
