This article discusses tanners in Madrid, Spain, during the 17th century, a time of great economic and social reform. The author considers the methods undertaken by the tanners to deal with these sweeping changes in society, including the development of a strong social network of guilds to maintain control over their industry. He also comments on the role of marriage as a strategy for coping with such social changes, specifically the succession of the business to male offspring, thus maintaining control within a family.
