Shape memory properties of biomedical Ti-Mo-Ag and Ti-Mo-Sn alloys

Abstract

Shape memory properties of Ti-Mo-Ag and Ti-Mo-Sn alloys consisting of biocompatible elements were investigated. The alloys with appropriate combination of Mo and Ag or Sn showed nearly perfect shape memory effect in convenient bending and heating tests. Recoverable tensile strain is more than 3% in some of Ti-Mo-Ag and Ti-Mo-Sn alloys. Microstracture observations and X-ray diffraction measurements before and after tensile test revealed that stress induced β to α″ martensitic transformation was origin of the shape memory effect.
