Abstract

The swimbladder, inner ear and lateral line systems of herring, sprat and other clupeoids are closely connected with each other. An account of the anatomy of these systems is given for adult herring and sprat, with details of how they develop in the herring. These anatomical studies are interpreted in the light of physiological and behavioural experiments which are to be described in detail in later papers. © 1976, Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom.
