Multidisciplinary management of brain metastases

Abstract

Metastatic brain tumors are increasingly important determinants of survival and quality of life in patients with cancer. The management of brain metastases is directed by prognostic factors, including the Karnofsky Performance Status, age, pathological diagnosis, number of brain metastases, and systemic condition. Most metastatic brain tumors are treated by surgery, radiosurgery, and/or whole brain radiation therapy. Adequate management strategy cannot be standardized to a single paradigm. Current diagnostic modalities and techniques are reviewed, and data of several clinical studies are presented to help physicians and surgeons make informed decisions about the benefits and risks of approaches.
