Occupational socialization: A challenge to lecturers in colleges of further education

Abstract

At first sight it might seem that those aspects of education we often call ‘socialization’ occur conspicuously at primary and secondary levels, but scarcely at all in traditional further education. It is argued here that, to the contrary, the FE lecturer is involved in such processes, though not in a formalized way. The suggestion is made that such involvement should be recognized, and appropriate attitudes and approaches formulated which would draw upon the lecturer's knowledge of the work situation from which students come, and also upon the lecturer's role as educator. © 1985 The Vocational Aspect of Education Ltd.
