Abstract
An improved method for the preparation of graphene oxide (GO) is described. Currently, that for GO the previously contiguous aro- Hummers’ method (KMnO4, NaNO3,H2SO4) is the most common method used for preparing graphene oxide. We matic lattice of graphene is interrupted by have found that excluding the NaNO3, increasing the amount of KMnO4, and performing the reaction in a 9:1 epoxides, alcohols, ketone carbonyls, and carboxylic groups.18⫺20 The disruption of mixture of H2SO4/H3PO4 improves the efficiency of the oxidation process. This improved method provides a greater the lattice is reflected in an increase in inter- amount of hydrophilic oxidized graphene material as compared to Hummers’ method or Hummers’ method with layer spacing from 0.335 nm for graphite additional KMnO4. Moreover, even though the GO produced by our method is more oxidized than that prepared by to more than 0.625 nm for GO.21 Brodie first Hummers’ method, when both are reduced in the same chamber with hydrazine, chemically converted graphene demonstrated the synthesis of GO in 1859 (CCG) produced from this new method is equivalent in its electrical conductivity. In contrast to Hummers’ method, by adding a portion of potassium chlorate the new method does not generate toxic gas and the temperature is easily controlled. This improved synthesis of to a slurry of graphite in fuming nitric GO may be important for large-scale production of GO as well as the construction of devices composed of the acid.22 In 1898, Staudenmaier improved on this protocol by using concentrated sulfuric subsequent CCG.
