Once organisms progressed beyond the level of single cells, it became essential to have a transport system to distribute nutrients and clear wastes. With the evolution of mammals and the development of means to regulate body temperature, the regulation of cardiac output became a major factor in the maintenance of homeostasis and the body heat of the organism.
