Abstract
The notion of a monad (or a triple) on a category goes back to Roger Godement [Go] and was later developed by Samuel Eilenberg, John Moore, Jonathan Beck, and others. Combining the theory of monads with that of monoidal categories, Ieke Moerdijk [Mo] formulated the notion of a bimonad. In this chapter, we outline the basics of the theory of monads and bimonads.
