What good Physical Education teachers do at the University? A case study

Abstract

The aim of this research was to know what good Physical Education teachers do in the field of Physical Education and Sport Sciences at the University of Valencia based on the analysis of their opinions. A qualitative study was conducted in which the researcher was the main instrument for obtaining, recording and interpreting the data. The best teachers in this field were selected at the University of Valencia. Teachers with a score higher than 4.5 out of 5 in the evaluation surveys of teaching conducted by the Quality Unit of University of Valencia were recruited during the academic year 2015-2016. Directed and open interview as well as a discussion group was used as technique of data collection. Categorical content analysis was carrying out to organise, deepen and interpret the meaning according to their testimonies. Findings are presented about what teachers do in their daily practice during the development of their teaching. The results of this study could reveal how good teachers develop their teaching as what elements characterise it in order to recognise the role of the teachers in the current university system.
