Refluxing of Bjorkman lignin from birch (Betula verrucosa) with 0.2 M hydrogen chloride in dioxan-water (9:1) for 4 h give considerable amounts of phenols with one and two aromatic rings (about 30% of the original lignin). A number of phenols have been identified. Most of them can be related to structural elements of the arylglycerol-b-aryl ether, 1,2-diaryl-1,3-propanediol, and syringaresinol types.
