Party Crashers in the Democracy Celebration: Gender-Based Political Violence in Brazil

Abstract

This paper aims to discuss discursive aspects of gender-based political violence experienced by Brazilian Members of Congress, considering an interview given by a young congresswoman sworn in 2019. Analysis of identification dynamics of the text, based on Resende and Ramalho (2019), van Dijk (2017), van Leeuwen (1997) and Castells (1999), allowed us to understand social and discursive biases in this differentiation and subordination of social genres, considering discourse properties such as the use of deitic expressions, the topic or macroproposition of the interview, persuasion maneuvers, assumptions and logical consequences or inferences, lexical choices. It is concluded that, for women, there is an relevant interrelation between success in elections, the accumulation of educational capital and political literacy, as well as accumulation and mobilization of resources such as economic capital, visibility and insertion in positions of social prestige (Vogel, 2019b).
