Abstract

Effectiveness of Chinese medicine therapy on bronchial asthma has been well known, and we have experienced some cases in which other Chinese medicines are also effective. On notice of asthmatic patients complicated of nasal symptoms, we studied effectiveness of Shin'i-seihai-to administrated to 10 asthmatic cases with chronic sinusitis-like symptoms such as purulent sputum or postnasal dropping. Besides, we studied effectiveness of Sho-seiryu-to on 75 asthmatic cases complicated of allergic rhinitis-like symptoms such as sneezing, serous nasal discharge or serous sputum, by means of a multi-central open trial. The results showed an improvement of nasal symptoms and a decrease in asthma attack in 60% of the Shin'i-seihai-to group, and an improvement of asthmatic symptoms in 53% of the Sho-seiryu-to group which were characterized by an improvement of allergic nasal symptoms. In regard to the pharmacological roles of each component in both Chinese medicines, we conclude that the symptoms of purulent rhinitis and asthma could be improved by antipyretic, analgetic, drainagic, anti-inflammatory and antitussive actions of Shin'i-seihai-to in the former group, and that the symptoms of allergic rhinitis and asthma could be improved by antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antispasmodic and antitussive actions of Sho-seiryu-to in the latter group.
