Abstract

The basic idea of video analysis is not that new. In fact, one of the earliest examples was a photographic experiment set up in 1878. The experiment was designed to address a question about the motion of a galloping horse. Do horses ever lift all four feet off the ground during their gallop? It is actually difficult to see with the unaided eye, since the process is quite fast (as fast as a galloping horse). The experiment used multiple cameras to obtain 24 still images at different times during the horse's movement.
