Abstract

The design, implementation and development of flexible manufacturing cells is examined in five manufacturing companies, including Eaton Corp.'s Airflex Division, Kennametal Inc., Xomax Corp., Saturn Corp. and High Vacuum Apparatus Mfg. Co. In every case, the cells have provided flexibility, efficiency and greater production rates all at lower costs than traditional production methods. In its consolidation and automation of processes, cellular technology permits much faster response to market needs. An important element in the success of cellular technology is personnel training, but the investment is easily recovered in terms of higher productivity.
