This article provides a review of the prevalence and course of alcohol use, alcohol-related problems, and alcohol dependence in adolescents. The adverse outcomes of early use of alcohol are described, and risk and protective factors for adolescent drinking that represent individual, sociocontextual, and environmental domains are discussed. Finally, the article concludes with a brief review of prevention, screening, and treatment efforts that aim to reduce alcohol-related harm among adolescents. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
