Abstract

Masjid yang menjadi identitas kota Medan ini memang bukan sekedar bangunan antik bersejarah biasa, tetapi juga menyimpan keunikan tersendiri mulai dari gaya arsitektur, bentuk bangunan, kubah, menara, pilar utama hingga ornamen-ornamennya baik ornamen pada bangunan ataupun pada kaligrafinya yang menghiasi tiap bagian bangunan tua ini. Bangunan masjid Raya Al-Ma’shun merupakan bangunan tua dengan gaya arsitektur Eropa (Romawi, Belanda dan Spanyol), Timur Tengah, dan Asia (Moghul/India) yang dihiasi berbagai bentuk ornamen-ornamen. Setiap ornamen mempunyai tanda-tanda yang menggambarkan kehidupan keragaman budaya masa lalu hingga sekarang, kajian tanda ini di sebut juga kajian semiotik deskriptif. Tujuan penelitian ini menjelaskan makna dari tanda-tanda yang terdapat pada ornamen. Ornamen itu terdapat pada gapura utama, serambi, ruang utama, mihrab, mimbar dan menara. Bentuk  ornamen tersebuat antara lain pucuk bunga, kuntum bunga, bunga-bungaan, kelopak bunga, segi tiga, horizontal, geometris, lengkung. Makna yang terkandung dalam ornamen itu dekoratif, Lambang kekekalan, ungkapan yang sempurna untuk keadilan”. Lambang dari manusia, tentang kesadaran dan asas keselarasan.   The mosque which has become the identity of Medan is not merely an antique historical building, but it also has its own uniqueness such as its architecture, building shape, dome, tower, main pillars, ornaments, and the calligraphy which decorate every corner of the building. Masjid Raya Al-Ma’shun is an old mosque with the architecture of European (Rome, Holland and Spanish), Middle East, and Asian (Mughal/Indian) and decorated with many ornaments. Every ornament has signs which represent the cultural diversity from the past to present, the analysis of signs is also called descriptive semiotics. This research aimed to explain the meanings in the ornament signs. The ornaments which were analyzed were in the main gate, terrace, main room, mihrab, pulpit and tower. The ornaments shapes were flowers, flower buds, flower petals, triangle, horizontal, geometrics, and curves. The meanings represented in the signs were decorative, everlasting, and the perfect expression for justice, the symbols from human about consciousness and harmony.
