Chronic gastritis probably represents a group of heterogeneous disorders. It has been argued that both endoscopic and radiographic findings are so variable that reliable diagnostic criteria have not been established. Turner et al. correlate their roentgen criteria with endoscopic observations and conclude that antral gastritis is a distinct clinical entity. While difficult of objective proof, it is not inconceivable that alterations is the functional state may be the initial sign of disease.
