Microcytic anemias are primarily caused by nutritional iron defficiency, iron loss resulting from gastrointestinal disease, iron malabsorption, thalassemia syndromes, severe anemia resulting from chronic disease, acute inflammation, zinc and copper defficiency, lead poisoning and sideroblastic anemia. In some patients with microcytic anemias, the cause remains unexplained, suggesting a genetic disorder of iron metabolism or heme synthesis. Sometimes, the diagnosis is challenging and cannot be established on the basis of a single test results. In this article, the main diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in children with microcytic anemia are discussed.
