Managing anxiety and depressive symptoms in adults with autism-spectrum disorders

Abstract

The article presents a case study of management of a 22-year-old autism-spectrum disorder (ASD) patient who presented with severe anxiety and depressive symptoms. He had no personal or family history suggestive of bipolar affective disorder and was started on a typical adult dose of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It is suggested that the treatment of comorbid depression and anxiety disorders using SSRI should be made case-by-case.
