Abstract
The "germ theory" that evolved over centuries allowed a monocausal focus on infections that facilitated the development of effective treatments (public health, hygiene, antibiotics). A single causal focus for chronic disease, however, has been lacking. The finding of a form of low-grade, systemic inflammation ("metaflammation") underlying much, if not all, chronic disease has led to a consideration, outlined here, on "anthropogens," or man-made disease determinants. This is the main focus for chronic disease management through Lifestyle Medicine.
