Abstract

The paper presents a systematic mathematical approach for designing a regulator for a STATCOM connected to a multimachine power system for improving the voltage profile during different operation conditions. The paper addresses the need for redefining the controller and generating a control signal to effectively allow the STATCOM to react with higher reactive support during dynamic disturbances. An auxiliary wide area damping controller is also proposed to supplement a fixed structure controller for the proposed STATCOM to improve the angular stability of the selected power system. The input signals for the proposed controllers are selected from the network parameters with highest participation factor to damp out the local modes of oscillations. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is tested on IEEE 12 bus system and compared with conventional STATCOM control scheme.
