Abstract
In this paper the classical Ritz and Galerkin equations are generalized and extended in such a way that both approximation methods are applicable to self-adjoint and to non-self-adjoint problems. The conditions to be fulfilled by the coordinate functions are weakened; the coordinate functions need not satisfy the dynamical boundary conditions, and under certain circumstances not even the geometrical ones. The latter remark applies to the Galerkin method as well. © 1967 Springer-Verlag.
