Transformative Narratives: Unveiling Sexual Violence Survivors' Stories Through Educational Theatre in Kosovo

Abstract

Objective: The doctoral thesis presents educational theatre as a therapeutic and awareness-raising approach for supporting female survivors of wartime sexual violence in Kosovo. It promotes social acceptance, educates survivors' families, and helps them come to terms with the traumatic experiences of their loved ones.   Theoretical Framework: This research employs educational theater to spotlight female survivors of sexual violence post-Kosovo-Serbia war, aiming to reshape societal views and build empathy. With 20,000 estimated affected, it underscores urgent needs for mental health support and social integration.   Method: The dissertation employs observation, participatory observation, analysis, theatrical performance staging, and statistical data analysis. Conducted from 2020-2021, it centers on the original drama Queens without Crowns, directed by Marigona Bekteshi Ferati, as a key contribution to the research.   Results and Discussion: The 2020-2021 research led to the performance Queens without Crowns, exploring social exclusion, audience perception shifts, survivor support, and family perspective changes. Through educational theater, it documents survivors’ experiences, fostering empathy, understanding, and advocacy for female rape victims' rights and healing.   Research Implications: The theatrical performance aims to transform spectators' views on wartime rape victims, offering survivors emotional support by bringing their experiences to the stage. Families in Kosovo are encouraged to reconsider their perspectives on the traumatic experiences endured by their loved ones.   Originality/Value: This study pioneers the use of educational theater in Kosovo to help sexual violence survivors overcome trauma, reduce stigma, and support social integration. It aims to be part of therapeutic approaches for coping with wartime rape trauma among victims in Kosovo.
