Abstract

This short guide on rheumatic disease (to use the term in its widest sense) outlines the social importance and gives a brief classification of rheumatic diseases. Pathology, histology, immunology, mode of anamnesis and examinations of the various joints as well as the soft tissues are discussed. Laboratory data are given, and the general practitioner, for whom this book is written, is also given some information about glycoproteins, seromucoids and enzymes in the blood and synovial fluid. Radiology is also dealt with. The importance of team sessions for treatment are stressed and in the part on pharmacotherapy the antirheumatic drugs are individually discussed. Each disease is then described in some detail. Treatment on an out patient basis is advocated. Metabolic and bone diseases are not forgotten and there are useful chapters on general prophylaxis, epidemiology, socioeconomic aspects, balneotherapy and on the organization of the battle against rheumatic diseases. There are some 40 illustrations.
