Abstract

Objective. To understand the meaning of the nurse's commitment to nursing care. Method. Phenomenological study, developed in seven Family Health Units in Salvador, Bahia, with twenty-one nurses, through the phenomenological interview. For the understanding of the discourses the Humanistic-Existential-Personalist Triad Configuration was used. Results. Nurses' commitment has dimensions, their meaning represents the very essence of the profession, is directed to nursing care based on satisfaction, recognition, motivation, ethics and the search for a change in the health standards of the population. It was revealed in resource constraints in health services, in the limitations of professional competencies, in daily assignments, in the process of humanizing care, in solving user problems, in monitoring families and in linking with the community. Conclusions. It was possible to learn a face of the phenomenon by revealing the sense of commitment as the essence of nursing care.
