Abstract

Mathematics is the clearest and most unambiguous science. However, mathematics for most students, mathematics is one of the most feared and difficult subjects to understand due to a lack of understanding of the concepts needed. In line with the mathematical concepts needed in learning, a teacher can associate mathematical concepts with local culture. Mathematics found in culture is called ethnomathematics. This study explores the mathematical concepts of Gotong and Bulang. Gotong and Bulang are part of the Simalungun traditional clothing which functions as a head cover for married men and women. This study aims to explore various mathematical concepts contained in Gotong and Bulang Simalungun. The research method used is a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature study. The data collection instruments used were observation sheets, interview sheets, cameras, field notes and voice recorders. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results obtained from this study indicate that there are mathematical concepts in Gotong and Bulang, namely the concept of numbers, parallel lines, folding symmetry, triangular plane shapes, and transformation geometry. Thus, it can be concluded that Gotong and Bulang Simalungun can be used as tools for learning mathematics that are concrete in understanding mathematical concepts.
