Abstract

The mitotic metaphase chromosomes for nineteen species of Drosophilidae were analysed through modern air-dried technique. Of the species examined, the karyotypes of D. andamanensis, D. prolongala, D. jambulina, D. obscuricornis and D. paratriangulata are to be reported for the first time. Moreover, the present study has also detected some differences with respect to the morphology of both autosomes as well as sex-chromosomes in D. lalifshahi, D. malerkotliana, D. parabipectinata, D. eugracilis, D. ficusphila, D. rafasekari, D. nasuta, Zaprionus paravittiger and Scaptomyza pallida. Further, no intraspecific karyotype variation is known to occur in the Indian populations of D. takahashii, D. immigrans and D. kikkawai. However, heterochromatin polymorphism could be detected in the Indian strains oí some Drosophila species. © 1979 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
