Abstract
A new dicarboxylic acid, poly(ethylene glycol)-bis-(N-trimellitylimido-4- phenyl carboxylic acid) (3), bearing two preformed imide rings, was synthesized from the condensation of poly(ethylene glycol)-bistrimellitic anhydride (1) and p-aminobenzoic acid (2) at 1:2 molar ratio. A series of poly(amide-esterimide)s (PAEIs) with inherent viscosities of 0.19-0.51 dl/g was prepared by triphenylphosphite-activated polycondensation from the diimide-dicarboxylic acid containing biocompatible poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-600) with various aromatic diamines. All the resulting PAEIs were readily soluble in a variety of polar organic solvents. These polymers were fully characterized with FT-IR spectroscopy. Thermal properties, 1H-NMR and XRD study of these new PAEIs are also reported. The results demonstrate that this novel polymers show a crystalline structure as well as high thermal stability. © 2012 Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden.
