Role of National and International Renal Organizations in Providing Kidney Care in Disasters

Abstract

Disasters, both natural and man-made, are increasing in frequency and severity. The health impacts are especially severe for patients developing or living with kidney diseases. Lessons learned from past earthquakes, hurricanes, and warfs inform professionals and patients about preparation for future humanitarian needs, particularly in poorly resourced regions. Patients’ requirements differ depending on their underlying condition and treatment. In the aftermath of a disaster, health systems may be overwhelmed and the demand for care is frequently beyond the capacity of local governments. We review the support national and international renal societies can provide to help fill the gap.
