Female students' attitude towards physics: A descriptive-quantitative study in Junior High School at Islamic Boarding School

Abstract

Physics education research about student's attitudes in formal education have put out a large number of papers. This paper reports a descriptive-quantitative about attitude towards physics female students on Islamic Boarding School. The subject of research were female student's Junior High School whose have around 12-15 years old in 7thuntil 9thgrade. The instrument to measure attitude towards physics is adopted from The Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey (CLASS). The research has been designed as preliminary study, in order to collect data attitude toward physics so the instrument CLASS was administered online to all participated students. Obtained data were analyzed by using CLASS Scoring Tool and ANOVA by IBM SPSS Statistics 22. This research found that overall students have positive attitude towards physics. Especially on personal interest, real world connection, problem solving general, problem solving confidence, and senses making/effort categories. But have less positive attitude toward physics in problem solving sophistication, conceptual understanding and applied conceptual understanding. Furthermore, there were significant difference in average of attitudes toward physics based on age-level.
