Abstract
This study analyzes the development of travel and tourism in Bandung during the Dutch East Indies colonial period, with a focus on the early twentieth century. The rise of tourism in this era was closely connected to the emergence of leisure consciousness among Europeans and other foreigners following the Industrial Revolution, which cultivated a middle-class recreational culture. Capitalist enterprises responded to this demand by organizing travel packages to the colonies, including the Dutch East Indies. In Bandung, tourism growth was further supported by the modernization of the colonial tropical city, designed to improve the quality of life for European residents. Methodologically, this study employs a historical-descriptive approach using primary sources such as tourist booklets, travel writings, and colonial administrative reports, complemented by secondary literature. The findings show that Bandung emerged as one of the most popular travel destinations for Europeans due to its natural landscape, cool climate, and the construction of its image as a “modern tropical city.” Tourism promotion through illustrated booklets and international exhibitions played a significant role in shaping Bandung’s identity as the “Paris of Java.” Two dominant forms of tourism developed during this period: natural tourism, centered on mountain and valley exploration, and urban tourism, highlighting modern architecture and leisure facilities. This study concludes that early twentieth-century tourism in Bandung reflected both the capitalist commodification of leisure and the colonial imagination of the “exotic East.” As a result, Bandung became a symbolic representation of modern colonial urban life in the Dutch East Indies and a key site for the intersection of power, culture, and space..Abstrak Penelitian ini menganalisis dinamika perjalanan dan perkembangan pariwisata di Bandung pada masa kolonial Hindia Belanda, khususnya awal abad ke-20.
