Abstract

It is accepted by the medical profession that the etiology of lichen simplex chronicus is physical and emotional, with metabolic, immunologic, or genetic elements. Because lichen simplex chronicus may manifest itself in the lower extremity, podiatrists must recognize the skin disease for timely treatment and referral. They must be aware that the pruritis may be the first sign of a systemic illness.
