Characteristics and Treatment of Four Homicidal Adolescents

Abstract

Four boys had attempted homicide using firearms, and in three instances the results were fatal. These boys were evaluated and treated because of highly dangerous behavior, either to others or themselves, while in a juvenile detention center. The two boys who had emotional relationships with their victims were suicidal, and they were treated with psychotherapy. The two boys who had shot strangers were hostile; they had destroyed property and fought with inmates and staff. These boys were managed with behavior therapy. Each of these individuals met DSM-III-R criteria for conduct disorder, had records of previous delinquent acts, and were free of psychotic symptomatology. © 1988, The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
