Abstract

The objective is to identify from a survey, what factors are occurring in rural average students, as they make the transition from high school completion to university studies. The data was collected and analyzed by quantitative methods and the sample consisted of 288 students. A survey was applied from 5 official and 2 private institutions of the Municipality of Lebrija-Santander. The results show that the current education received by high school students is not in accordance with the state's requirements to continue studying and get a quality job. The main factors affecting continuity and permanence in the higher level are limited income from parents (73%) and a low academic performance (27%), generating that students want to work independently (51%). It was also observed that 100% of the students have poor skills and abilities to solve problems and innovate and apply their knowledge in practice. The factors identified suggest that the institutions must change their way of transmitting knowledge, thinking about learning innovation, since in Colombia young people in the rural sector are being evaluated in the same way as those in the urban sector, without taking into account the differences in each sector. The educational model to be developed must be based on the needs, social demands, and context, restructuring educational plans, programs, and policies articulated with rurality, addressing competencies that favor entrepreneurship and effective self-management of the young people.
