Abstract
Scientific fraud has been documented across multiple disciplines, and chemistry is no exception. Recent studies indicate that contamination of materials, methodological errors, and unreliable data, results, or analyses account for over 25% of retracted publications. This article argues that the proper implementation of ISO/IEC 17025, which establishes requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories, can help chemistry laboratories generate reliable data. When correctly applied, ISO/IEC 17025 assures the quality of laboratory results. Furthermore, laboratories that voluntarily also seek accreditation under this standard undergo annual third-party assessments, reinforcing the integrity of their outcomes. Consequently, compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 or accreditation may serve as valuable tools for researchers to minimize unintentional errors during testing and for journal editors and reviewers to prevent scientific misconduct.
