Abstract
This paper traces the development of methodologies for graphics system design, and relates these activities to graphics standardization efforts. It describes early work on graphics system design, and presents some of the problems and issues involved in designing portable graphics systems. Two specific issues—application program structure and modularization—are discussed in detail, showing how they impact graphics package design. The paper concludes with a discussion ef how these methodologies were applied to the design of the GSPC Core Graphics System. © 1978, ACM. All rights reserved.
