Abstract
The European algae industry represents a promising emerging sector of the EU Blue Bioeconomy. However, the obstacles and limitations to the advancement of this sector include regulatory barriers, the relatively small size of the market, the sustainability of the production chain and the low level of consumer awareness. To achieve greater market penetration of microalgae-based products, innovative communication strategies will be crucial. In this context, MICROALGAE is a comic book trilogy that aims to raise awareness of the world of microalgae through illustration. The inaugural comic, entitled “The Hidden World”, features four protagonists that represent distinct genera of microorganisms, the cyanobacteria Arthrospira, Nannochloropsis, a diatom and Scenedesmus, which are highly valued in water treatment processes. The four characters are engaged in a narrative imbued with adventure and action as they confront environmental threats. In the second book, entitled “Sea of Ardora”, the microalgae assist the Mareel people, whose lives are threatened by the presence of toxic waste dumps. They also encounter a new friend, the dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans. Following the success of the initial two comics, a third adventure, entitled “Beyond Earth”, sees several species of microalgae embarking on a terraforming mission to Mars. The protagonists from the first two chapters are joined by Chroococcidiopsis, an extremophile cyanobacterium. Haematococcus and Porphyridium, which synthesize potent antioxidants and photoprotectants, will be the experts in radiation protection. Each chapter is preceded by a fact sheet that provides supplementary scientific data on the microalgae or other subjects related to them, including bioremediation, sustainable development goals, milky seas, and so forth. This paper outlines the creative and research process undertaken to produce this successful trilogy of comics about the microalgae, which has been recognized for its contribution to ocean awareness and science dissemination.
