Water development for Israel: Challenges and opportunities

Abstract

In recent years several close studies have examined the water sector in Israel. Along with academic research and private technological development, activities of the sector and the institutional structure of the sector were examined by capacities such as the state comptroller, a parliamentary investigation committee, the water commission, and the drinking water standards committee. These studies reflect on the gaps in the water sector but also indicate a very dynamic and advanced sector that deals with multiple sources of risks and large climatic uncertainty by disseminating new technologies of water production, water treatment, and advanced management tools. The technological advantage and the long experience of Israel in water management in all sectors of the economy can be put to the benefit of regional neighbouring entities and to the international community by exporting knowledge and technology. The expected establishment of the new National Authority of Water and Sewage provides a unique opportunity for cooperative work among the various governmental offices, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and citizens. © 2007 Springer.
