Abstract

Introduction: Strongyloidiasis is a parasitosis caused by the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis, which commonly causes gastrointestinal problems. Clinical case: We present the case of a 30-year-old man who developedStrongyloideshyperinfection, withahistoryofapresumptivediagnosisofpolymyositisforwhichhe received a short course of corticosteroids. Upon admission, he presented with hyporexia, generalized weakness, cachectic syndrome, self-limited intermittent diarrhea, oral intolerance, and mild abdominal distension. Our patient reached the dissemination stage, which resulted in severe damage at the intestinal level. The diagnosis was difficult due to the low excretion of larvae in the feces. Treatment was started with parenteralivermectinatadoseof1.2mlviascevery48hoursfor03doses,withgoodresponsetotreatmentand good tolerance of the oral route. The importance of presenting the case is to present the diagnostic and therapeuticapproachtothisdiseasethathasbeenlittlestudiedinPerú.
