Abstract

This paper provides a review of the literature on digital finance, cryptocurrency, and financial dependence in relation to economic development and growth. We summarize the evidence of how cryptocurrencies and digital finance impact growth. We show further that financial dependence and credit ratings are also critical to growth, along with language and culture. We introduce the papers in this special issue and elaborate on future research opportunities for these topics.
