Abstract

The Social Strategies Rating Scale (Aguiar, 2007) was designed to measure the specific social strategies that preschool-aged children use in the social tasks of peer group entry, maintaining play, and resolving conflicts. In this study, we investigate the psychometric characteristics of the scores obtained with Social Strategies Rating Scale and Social Skills Rating System (SSRS; Gresham & Elliott, 1990) in 349 Portuguese preschoolers. Internally consistent, correlated with a widespread measure of social competence, and with some variations as a function of children’s sex and age, the social strategies of Maintaining play, Harmonious initiation, Active initiation, and Conflict resolution may prove useful in future research on peer relations.
