The purpose of this study was to analyze differences between groups with different achievement goal profiles on their self-determination and beliefs about the natures and determinants of sport competence. The participants were 577 male football players. Ages ranged from 15 to 39 years (M=21.71, SD=5.65). Participants completed Portuguese versions of the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ), the Self-Regulation Questionnaire (SRQ) and the Questionnaire de Conceptions relatives à la Nature de l´Habilité Sportive (QCNHS). Results suggested that the more positive profiles are the Hi-T/ Lo-E; Hi-T/ Hi-E groups, that also were the most self-determined in their behaviour. On other hand, the fact that they believe most than the other groups that the competence for playing football arises from the learning and it's subjected to improvement, is a positive and desirable tendency, because these players also had a higher perception of control on the development of their competence. The L-T/ Hi-E group presented significantly lower scores than did the another three groups in RAI and in the belief that the sport competence is stable, what can mean they are the most risky group for dropping out the football practicing.
