Abstract

Presents the case of a 36-yr-old Nigerian married father of 4 children who was diagnosed with Koro, a syndrome of acute anxiety characterized by extreme fear that the penis is shrinking and may disappear into the abdomen. Although this is the 1st case reported in a Black African, the lack of psychiatric facilities and the stigma attached to mental disorders in this area are seen to be more responsible for this documentation. The concept of a "culture-bound" syndrome is discussed. (French abstract) (7 ref) ((c) 1997 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved)
