Abstract

Soil is the foundation of civil construction building to receive and hold the load from a structure on it. There are some problems that must be faced by a civil engineer in the field, which are often faced with the fact that the location has the poor soil characteristic, so to add the soil strength and to improve bearing capacity soil need to be stabilized. One of the methods that used to overcome these problems is stabilizing the soil by increasing the bearing capacity and reduce the swell shrinkage of the soil. The addition of fly ash is one of the methods to stabilize expansive soil, because fly ash is pozzolan, so that it can bind to minerals soil and make the soil stable , thus reducing the swell shrinkage of the soil and add soil strength. The research aims to find out the classification of the soil, soil plasticity index and find out the influence of addition of fly ash towards the physical properties of the soil, as well as knowing the value of Unconfined Compression Test (UCT) in existing conditions and after mixed with fly ash. Water content for the test taken from standard proctor compaction results with variations of the fly ash mix 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%. Based on the result, soil that stabilized by fly ash on a variation of 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% showed increase of soil strength plastic limits, and liquid limit soil but decrease in the value of specific grafity soil. The largest value of UCT result for soil sample mixed with fly ash levels by 20% and curing for 21 days, the strength value is 2,55 kg/cm2.
