Abstract

The existence of the temple in Jerusalem was closely related to Jewish worship, because the temple was the center of Israel's worship. The Jews living in exile, as well as those who remained in a post-exilic foreign land, had no temple nearby, apart from the existence of a synagogue. Furthermore, foreign nations took turns ruling over the Jews. This raises the question of how their worship was under foreign domination. This paper has been compiled as a result of literature research, to describe how the Jews worshiped during the intertestamental times. The results showed that worship, politics and culture are related in their implementation. In some instances, the priest as leader of Israelite worship had to deal with political affairs, and in other cases the faith of the Israelites was undermined by Hellenism.
