A longitudinal birth cohort study is uniquely able to collect information on exposures that antecede signs and symptoms leading to diagnoses, and on the development of neurocognitive and behaviour traits. Here we discuss the optimal time to start such a study, and criteria for inclusion and exclusion of subjects.© 2008 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.
