Abstract
Background: Perceived emotional intelligence (PEI) is the ability to understand emotions, which is crucial in academic settings. It is known that students with a higher PEI have better personal and professional performance. Objective: To assess the levels of PEI among health students at a higher education institution in Portugal. Methodology: Descriptive study, with a non-probability convenience sample of 94 students. An online questionnaire was applied with sociodemographic questions and the Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24 (TMMS-24). Results: The mean PEI sore for students was 85.90 [24,120]. Older students and those in master’s programs had the highest PEI scores. Among master’s students, those attending the Palliative Care program had the highest PEI scores. Conclusion: Joint projects should be developed between higher education institutions, healthcare institutions, and policymakers to support students in the development of PEI.
