Abstract

The sterols of pearl-oyster Pinctada martensi were isolated by preparative HPLC, and identified by GC-MS and IR. The structures of 21 sterols were established. And the sterol composition was determined by using GC. The major components were △5-sterols. It was specially characteristic of the pearl-oyster that a lot of saturated sterols and ring-saturated sterols were also present as lesser components. Rapid separation methods for sterols by using preparative HPLC (using a C8 column with a methanol/water (92: 8) mixture as eluding solvent) was developed. © 1987, The Japanese Society of Fisheries Science.
