Abstract

The article discusses metabolomics approaches to diabetes research including nontargeted and targeted methods. It stresses the importance of understanding the identity of metabolites and their concentrations to scientists who are interested in biological mechanisms. It states the advantage of mass spectrometry (MS)-based profiling technologies over nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in terms of sensitivity. The author emphasizes the absence of a single profiling technique that enables simultaneous examination of metabolites.
